The Songye settled in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They have a strong interest in magic, which affects many aspects of their lives. The Songye carvers excel in the production expressionistic and very dramatic masks. They were often topped by totemic animals or birds. The use of white on the mask symbolizes positive concepts such as purity and peace, the moon and light. Red is associated with blood and fire, courage and fortitude.
