Punu Okuyi Mask with a Bird

Okuyi Mask of the Punu people may look Asian, but no such influence has been established.

The Punu are equatorial people settled in the southwest of Gabon.  Punu masks have realistic, mostly white faces with protruding pursed lips.

This mask is topped by a bird in place of a high Punu coiffure. This is a rare feature for a Punu mask. Whatever the reason, the red lips on the womans' face and the red beak of the bird create beautiful rhythm.

This mask came back to us after 14 years in a private collection.
