Bozo people live along Niger river and are related to Bamana. They are known as people of the fish as they make their living by fishing in addition to hunting. Bozo create masks and puppets of vivid colors often decorated with contrasting dots. This crest was a part of the masquerade at the start of the hunt. It has a Janus presence - back to back faces.
The guide who located it for us comes from the family of a well known collector and dealer of Bozo art in Mali.
