Bozo Blue Bird Mask

Bozo people live along Niger river and are related to Bamana. They are known as people of the fish as  they make their living by fishing in addition to hunting. Bozo create masks  and puppets of vivid colors. It looks as if there were a number of similar bird masks created for a large celebration - with a bit of variation in size and color. When worn together by many people, they looked like a flock of birds of many colors in flight!

The guide who located it for us comes from the family of a well known collector and dealer of Bozo art in Mali.
