Colorful beaded masks have been produced in various areas of Cameroon's Grasslands, despite the ethnic and stylistic variations of people living in these regions. Some of the secret societies who used these masks, believed that according to tradition their masks had been created and consecrated by the ancestors themselves, others inspired great fear, there were masks decorated with beads, copper, and shells.
Most of the kingdoms depicted masks presenting male and female human heads or faces, or the buffalo, stag, elephant, birds masks. They are usually worn during state ceremonies or during annual festivities.
