The Baule people occupy a part of the Côte d'Ivoire between the Komoé and Bandama Rivers that is both forest and savanna land.

This mask is a wonderful classical Baule face whose serene expression is in a complete contrast with the very vibrant rider, who is turning his jumping horse right atop the mask. Red outfit of the rider underscores his energy. This is a work of a very accomplished and imaginative mask maker. The details: rider's revolver, boots, gloves, the horse's decoration and its prancing legs are made with loving precision. This is truly unique mask and sculpture in one.
