Bamileke Beaded Ancestor Figure


In Bamileke (Mbalekeo, Mileke) territories, the fon entrusted the guardianship of the sculptures to certain clan members. This was done as an insurance against the frequent fires - thus ensuring that treasured sculptures wouldn't all be lost at once. Masks and sculptures were decorated with beads and or cowrie shells. This figure comes from Cameroon.
