Efe/Gelede festivals where such masks appeared were held in the Spring. Masks came out on the first night of the festival to the sounds of songs praising "our mothers". This mask has very particular characteristic similar to other masks from the area known as apasa masks. They usually  have vertical ears and a fringe beard running along the jaw as well as facial marks. Almost all such masks are built on the tension between a serene face and very vivid vertical element - in this case - ears with bright geometrical forms, and a the totemic bird.
