Regal Procession African Bronze

Happy Procession

Rather naturalistically cast  bronze scenes were often used to tell stories. The present scene is one of them.

It depicts a procession at a festival. The chief is riding in a royal litter. His four tall carriers look very determined and dignified. He must be a person of high status because he is not walking. His extremely animated face is depicted in Bamum tradition with puffy cheeks, bulging eyes and full lips. The chief is wearing an elaborate head gear and beads. He is holding a ceremonial horn. Seated next to him are two assistants, or perhaps his two sons  - one holding  traditional Bamum smoking pipe and another - a ceremonial pitcher for libations. The chief exudes happiness and energy.

This bronze procession weighs 21 lbs, so you should have a sturdy place to display it.
