The land of the Kota, numbering some 75,000, is situated in the eastern part of Gabon, extending slightly into the Congo Republic. Kota figures represent an extremely stylized human body. Some reliquaries featured a large figure representing the lineage founder along with some smaller figures representing his successors.
The first exhibit of African art in NY City in 1913 had a similar Bakota figure.It was organized by the husband of Georgia O'Keefe photographer Alfred Stieglitz on Park Avenue.
