This tray for mixing of pains for rituals is graced by two figures holding babies.The religious beliefs and practices of Igbo speaking peoples identify a constellation of tutelary deities known as alusi oragbara. These unseen, proximate deities (encompassing places, principles and people) include the earth, rivers and other prominent features of the landscape, markets, war, remote founding ancestors and legendary heroes.
Overall the deities and their cults are considered responsible for the health, prosperity and general well-being of the people and the productivity of field and stream.
