The Baule people occupy a part of the Côte d'Ivoire between the Komoé and Bandama Rivers that is both forest and savanna land.

Mamiwata mask usually depicts a brightly colored female face surrounded or topped by animals - often snake and bird. Usually the animals are shown in dynamic poses and vivid colors and they allude to a local a story or a proverb.

Although the snake does not fly it has caught the bird whose home is in the sky.
