Horizontal chi waras are used mostly in the Djitoumou area of southern Mali, a group of about 30 villages. These masks are brought out during harvest festivals. They represent mythical beings with heads, horns, torsos and legs of various real and imaginary beasts who introduced ancestors to planting crops and taking care of them. These masks are always danced together  - male and female.
