The poro secret society was secret in the sense of a special admission rite was prescribed and what happened in the society could not be divulged. The most important role of this society was the separate education of the adolescent boy and girls and the final admission of each into an adult society. The role of the poro society was religio-social. It had also great political power in Liberia. This mask was produced by one of the tribes-members of the poro society, possibly by Mano and was probably used in initiation ceremonies.
