Bwa people scattered across Burkina Faso and Mali have a rich tradition of masquerade. Some of their masks are crowned with totemic animals. Some masks are decorated with rhythmic geometric patterns. Some masks represent specific beasts - crocodiles or scorpions. This vertical mask is worn on top of the head with the dancer looking out through the mouth of the giant scorpion. The mask has the characteristic BWA light and dark color pattern. The stinger on the back of the mask is ready for action.
