The Ogoni live in the south-east of the Niger Delta basin. Ken Saro-Wiwa (later executed) was one of the Ogoni known to the outside world. The Ogoni masquerade includes very distinct masks with moving jaws. In addition the masks, Ogoni carvers also made sculptures for  traditional secret male societies and rituals. Ogoni rituals fucuse on honoring of the ancestors, the growing of crops, the rearing of animals, and the significance of water to the region. This sculpture reflects the crucial role of water and crops in the lives of the Ogoni.
