Kurumba Antelope Mask

Sold

This striking antelope is actually a mask. Notice the openings for the eyes at the very bottom!

The Kurumba masks created by the Mossi people function as a link between the myths and the cyclical event rituals. As per original myth, Sawadougou (Yirige), the hero came down from the sky (this parallels the Bamana legends) wearing a mask. His wife and children were endowed with the features of the antelope, the hyena and the hare. Together they chased away the evil spirits just as the people were preparing to work in the fields in the spring. This hero appears at the death ritual following the mourning period with the same task - to guarantee a long life to elderly people.
