Among the Tuaregs of Nigerelegantly sculpted cushion supports are important items of any well-appointed household. They were carved by members of the guild known as Enaden, literally meaning 'the other', blacksmiths who have been instrumental in the creation of precisely those things that distinguished the upper classes of this society from the many vassal populations of the Tuareg world. The products of the Enaden are among the most potent of hegemonic symbols – for in sitting reclining upon the pillows and ehel, Tuareg nobles literally sit and lean upon these artists, dramatically re-enacting the historical relationship between themselves and the members of this guild. Tuareg sitting in his tent is to witness the fullness of his authority and to realize that he is filled with a sense of personal superiority that cannot be wrested from him.
