Mursi tribe of Ethiopia is one of the two tribes where women wear lip plugs.  A year before a young woman is ready to be married, she would design her own lip plugs and start getting her lip stretched

Wooden plugs are used at first, and clay ones (as the one pictured here) are used later on. Lip plugs are worn on special occasions and when men are around. 

We purchased these lip plugs while visiting tribal areas in extremely remote Omo River Valley of Ethiopia in February 2020.
