Kanaga masks are among the very memorable masks in Dogon territories of Mali and Burkina Faso. They are danced by many people at once, creating a very moving and emotionally charged scene.
This mask represents a bird "kommolo tebu". According to the myth, the hunter who killed the very first of such birds created a mask in its image. Atop the mask are the forebearers of the tribe.
This mask came back to us after 12 years in a private collection. Visit a very similar mask at our museum site.
