Besides face masks the Dan carried masquettes (ma go), which are called ‘passport’ masks. They were sewn onto a piece of cloth and kept in a leather pouch and possibly worn at the back. These small masks embody protective spirits. Sometimes they are used as a sacred object for oath taking and making sacrifices. They usually are small copies (less than 8”) of full-sized masks whose spirit may be contacted by manipulating the masquette. The “passport” masks may also act as witnesses during initiation ceremonies and protect the owner when he is away from home.
This mask comes with its own stand.
