First Wife's Necklace, Hamar people of Ethiopia

The Hamar, live in South Omo River Valley in Ethiopia. They are easily recognizable by their coiffures, elaborately decorated goatskins, colored with beads and cowries.

Women wear thick necklaces indicating their marital status. They wear a leather long tipped necklace if they are the first wife and only two iron necklaces if they are second, third or fourth wife to one man.

This necklace was directly collected by us in remote Omo Valley during our visit to Ethiopia in Februrary 2020
