This is a miniature version of a Dogon ladder which were used to enter the upper level of ginna (lineage leaders' house). As the residence of the elder lineage head and the site of shrines to lineage ancestors, the ginna can be seen to represent order and wisdom which are considered to be especially the province of elder males. This small ladder was created as a divination tool.
