The Lagoon people produced the figures, varying from 10" to 30" in height, which were usually full-frontal, standing female figures with muscular legs and arms. Typical are button-like scarification and elaborate coiffure divided into raised masses. The figures of this kind could have served in a variety of contexts. It may have been owned by a diviner, for use in conveying messages to the spirit world, or they may have been prescribed by the diviner for a client.
