Wooden dolls adorned with bright beads and colorful paint were a tradition in Yoruba. Some are known to collectors as Ibeji twins. This doll represents a different tradition - a doll to play with and to practice maternal skills. 

The Yoruba live in southwestern Nigeria and the Republic of Benin in an area of forest and savannah. The Yoruba people are the largest nation in Africa with an art-producing tradition.
