Mbwoolo protective figurine. Yaka or yakala means “males,” “the strong ones,” thus Bayaka, “the strong people.” The Yaka number about 300,000. They settled along the middle Kwango River  and along the Wamba River, in the southwest of the country. The tribe lives principally from hunting, although subsidiary farming is undertaken by the women. They cultivate manioc, yams, peas, pineapples and peanuts. Young men are expected to pass through various initiation stages, including circumcision. Highly artistic people, the Yaka give an aesthetic touch to many everyday objects such as combs, pipes, musical instruments. This figurine represents one of the Yaka tribe’s most widespread sculptural categories. Its function is to protect people against evils. Typical are the hands touching the chin and  squatting posture.
