Igbo (Ibo), Ikenga Figure.
An ikenga is a ritual object. It symbolizes
masculine strength and the ability to achievethrough ones own efforts
the Igbo ideals of status and success. In traditional Igbo terms, these ideals consist of
a large compound in which to live; high rank in a title-taking association (that is having
political power) and possession of the requisite emblems of such rank; bountiful yam
harvest; many wives and children; and numerous livestock. The essential feature of the ikenga is a pair of horns, usually considered to be
ram horns. The horns symbolize qualities attributed to the ram: aggression, perseverance,
and restraint when required. The ikenga may be
in the form of a human head or a complete figure. Its iconography may be minimal or
elaborate.
