Ibibio, Nigeria
Ceremonial ancestral
figure. Over
two million Ibibio live in Nigeria, between the Delta and the Cross River. The Ibibio
traditionally cultivate yams, plantains and maize. The social life of Ibibio is regulated
by several secret societies; the most important of these societies is ekpo (the
Ibibio word for ancestor). The ekpo
is responsible for the cult of the ancestors, who are in turn responsible for the welfare
of the people. For its part, the ekon society, whose authority stems from sculpted
figures in the sanctuaries, exercises social control over the community. It presents the
public with the show during festivities; music and dance are linked with a theatrical
play. Sometimes the arms are separated and nailed to the body; some sitting or standing
figures are used as marionettes in plays. The present figure is completely covered with
antelope skin. The specific function of the figure is unknown.
