Divination Statue. The name Gurunsi corresponds to various ethnicities inhabiting a part of the Mossi plateau: the Nunuma, Nuna, Winiama, Lela, and Kasena. Together they number about 200,000 people. As farmers, they adopted the slash-and-burn system of cultivation. Some fields held by the community are worked by associations of young people. They organize large collective fishing expeditions during the dry season; during these they also hunt. Gurunsi statues, kept inside huts or on family shrines, are reserved for divination. The diviner possesses a variety of magic objects, among them statues of wood or of bronze which help him to associate with spirits of the bush.
