Grassland, Cameroon

Ceremonial headdress. The beautiful, once heavily forested volcanic mountains of the Cameroon Grassland are home to a diversity of kingdoms, chiefdoms, and independent villages that, while largely autonomous, display considerable political, religious, and artistic unity, including sculpture and masks. This headdress representing a human head and the body of an unknown animal came from the Tikar region situated in north-west part of Cameroon, near the border of Nigeria. The function of this unusual and mysterious headdress is not clear.
