Ancester figure.  Bangwa is a small Grassland kingdom, situated in the Bamileke cultural region. The artistic production of the people living in the Grassland of Cameroon is closely associated with royal and societal ceremonies. Large figures, thrones and prestige paraphernalia are used by the king to assert his power. Memorial statues of this type were exhibited publicly not only during enthronements but also in royal funerals, agricultural ceremonies, and commemorative festivals. They were set up in front of the royal palace or on the royal dancing ground as icons linked to royal history, authority, and legitimacy. The subjects carved included not only royalty but also palace ministers, and ritually powerful persons such as the mothers of twins.
