Ceremonial vessel. The Bamum inhabit the savanna (Grassland) in the west of the country and are numbering some 80,000. They speak a Bantu language. The art of Cameroon is the art of a royal court that had a complex protocol and numerous rituals. The king and his court is a focal point of the tribe, and exerts powerful influence upon the development of the plastic art, although it must be remembered that Cameroon has hundreds of chieftainries.   Their art tends towards dramatization, power and sumptuous luxury.  This ceremonial vessel, apparently for the palm vine, is an interesting example of the Bamum art. It was made to be used in a court ceremony.
