Grassland, Cameroon
Headdress as a figure of a wife of a
king (fon). The artistic production of the people
living in the Grassland of Cameroon is closely associated with royal and societal
ceremonies. This territory is a home to a
diversity of kingdoms, chiefdoms, and independent villages that display considerable
political, religious, and artistic unity. The art of the Grassland is the art of a
royal court that had a complex protocol and numerous rituals. Longstanding traditions of
royal gift-giving and conquest also led to striking stylistic fluidity that characterizes
this regions arts. This art tends towards dramatization, power and sumptuous luxury.
The fon and his court is a focal point, it exerts powerful influence upon the
development of the plastic art. This headdress representing a sitting woman represents a
wife of the fon. Rich decorations underline richness and high position of the
woman.
